On February 28th, Concretos Moctezuma made its biggest supply ever utilizing two main plants (Central plant and Eulalia Guzman plant), five support plants in Distrito Federal, and 101 revolving units, two stationary pumps and three telescopic pumps, reaching the time limit of 5681 m3 in 23 hours at the MIYANA development.

Gigante Grupo Inmobiliario and private investors are providing five billion pesos to build the project, a mega development that includes a mall, offices and a residential complex that will be located in the Polanco quarter in Mexico City; and that consists of 500,000 square meters of construction in a 44,000 square meters terrain. The first stage, which will take place during a five-year period, includes the construction of two towers, one for housing and another for offices.

Thus, on this initial date, a massive 5681 m3 supply for the foundations was made, thanks to the joint effort of Grupo VYG, S.A. de C.V. and Concretos Moctezuma, an alliance that has yielded results for more than 20 years.

Technical Information

The massive concrete casting of the MIYANA mega development was achieved thanks to the coordination between Grupo VYG and the Production, Logistics and Technical areas of Moctezuma, which resulted in an excellent job and, most important, without element fissures.

The concrete’s thickness would change during founding, because it has a thickness at the center of 1.80 meters, 90 cm at the middle zone and 60 cm at the edges.

The readings were obtained from the deepest zone, for it is there where the greatest hydration heat is generated.

Massive concrete is used in constructions where big volume elements are required, as in the founding of buildings; hydroelectric projects and thermoelectric, etc., where it is not enough to have good casting logistics, pumping equipment, motorevolving units, but require a control of the high temperatures generated in the inner part of the element and on the surface, due to the concrete’s hydration heat.

The definition of massive concrete is when the thermal behavior or heat generation may lead to the production of cracks and changes of volume in elements of important dimensions (ACI 116R).

The biggest risk massive concretes present is the existence of fissures that facilitate the migration of water from the phreatic levels to the reinforcement steel, giving place to its corrosion. The water introduced to the interior and exterior of the concrete element contains sulfates that degrade the concrete and diminish its useful life.

To avoid or reduce the creation of fissures we use the recommendations of the ACI (American Concrete Institute), because we must have an energetic control of the following issues:

  • - The selection of the quantity and type of cement is of huge importance, as we have to use cements with low hydration heat and where the quantity of cement doesn’t produce a larger generation of heat.
  • - The mix must present the lowest possible contraction, so the aggregates (gravel and sand) must be quality materials, with the lowest quantity of thins when it comes to sand.
  • - The initial temperature of fresh concrete must be the lowest possible, meaning between 21 to 25 ºC to avoid an increase in temperature in the hardened state, which occurs the second and fourth day after casting. As an example, if we obtain high temperatures at fresh state (>30 ºC), temperatures in the area of 80 ºC are obtained at the hardened state, resulting in a high probability of fissure creation.
  • - It is very important that the difference between the surface temperature and the core temperature of the element doesn’t pass 20 ºC.
  • - Another important measure is the saturation of the element, be it with a water brace or with water saturated foam rubber. Above the surface we used a plastic that avoided the loss of evaporation, so the element reduced its temperature in a uniform or monolithic manner.
  • - After the element’s core temperature is between 15 and 10 ºC compared to the atmosphere, the falseworks can be retired and the casting must last a minimum of 7 days.
  • - Temperatures are measured whit copper tubes of ½” and thermo pairs, whose sensor is introduced in the empty tube.
